Where Did Memes Come From In 2019?

The earliest known instance of the meme was posted on the subreddit r/dankmemes on January 9th, 2018, by user u/The-Great-Blend. The post featured a picture of the earth with the caption « When did the biggest planet on earth meme first appear? » The post received over 4,000 upvotes and 190 comments in the first two weeks. On September 16th, 2019, the YouTube[1] channel UNIVERSE DOPE shared a video titled « Zooming out from Earth (4K) » in which they visualized a zoom-out from Germany to outer space, passing through the Milky Way galaxy and beyond. Over the course of three years, the video received roughly 1.4 million views and 22,000 likes (shown below). On August 18th, the Facebook[8] account kaamelott.les.repliques.cultes posted a French variation of the meme. This post (shown below, right) received more than 11,000 reactions and 60 shares. However, when the image was shared by the Facebook account Marvel & Dc comics,[4] it received more than 5,400 reactions and 470 shares.

It’s important to know how that happened, so let’s take a look at the internet’s evolution, as seen through memes, over the last decade-plus. It’s popularity shows no signs of waning, and it will continue to be one of the most popular memes around for years to come.
